Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions were the neutral fan’s favorite storyline in 2023, with the team breaking a playoff win drought that went back to the 1991 season. Goff got one over against his old team, the LA Rams, in the wild card, which must have been extremely satisfying for him on a personal level.
Goff also had a very good campaign in NFL fantasy, finishing as the QB7 on the season with 303.1 points, averaging 17.8 per game. Now, that average is important, as while he was a safe pair of hands, 14 QBs had better ppg than Goff, albeit Joe Flacco and Anthony Richardson beating it in smaller sample sizes.
Jared Goff is the consensus QB14 for the 2024 season (as per Fantasy Pros) and has an average draft position of No. 89. This means that realistically, there are better options out there. However, if you are looking to get Goff as a late-QB draft strategy, you can leave him for a long time and get the rest of your team in place first.
You can certainly do that before taking Goff in the seventh or eighth round (depending on your league size), and feel pretty safe in the knowledge that the Lions QB has a safe floor and a decent ceiling.
Jared Goff’s 2024 NFL fantasy outlook: What numbers to expect from the Lions QB?
The Detroit Lions were a second-half meltdown from making the Super Bowl, and while their aggressive playcalling has been a topic of discussion, they have every intention of building on that disappointment. Detroit will likely play the same kind of aggressive football, perhaps tempered with occasional caution learned from their San Francisco experience.
Goff threw for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and rushed for a further 21 yards and 2 TDs in 2023. Given he rarely misses games (two full 17-game campaigns in a row), Goff feels a safe bet to play the whole season, although the Lions will want to improve on his 30 sacks from 2023.
Jared Goff will be aiming for similar numbers this season, albeit with fewer INTs. This feels achievable as a lot of the key pieces on his offense are the same, but it is unlikely he can go much higher than his impressive 2023 form. 4,500 yards and 30 TDs are probably his ceiling, but those are good numbers if you manage to get him in the seventh round and score a few fantasy diamonds in your first six picks.
