The Cleveland Browns looked done for the season when they entered Week 8’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns were 1-6, on a backup QB and had traded their WR1 to the Buffalo Bills. They say division games are different and Cleveland certainly proved that, beating the then-5-2 Ravens 29-24.
This was the Browns’ best offensive day in 2024 and fantasy managers immediately took note of QB Jameis Winston. QB-needy teams are wondering if he could be the one to guide them through Week 9, where the Browns face a stingy defense in the LA Chargers.
This is a tough game to navigate, so let’s take a look at Cleveland’s fantasy weapons in Week 9:
Browns’ Week 9 Fantasy Outlooks
QB: Jameis Winston
Jameis Winston threw for 417 yards and 4 TDs against Baltimore, coming away with 33.08 points. It is hard to predict him doing the same again against LA, but Winston certainly profiles as a decent pickup for teams navigating byes and injuries.
It’s hard to predict whether a QB with such a history of interceptions will continue to play such clean football, and Week 9 could be a boom-bust scenario. More likely than either, Winston will be somewhere in between and his numbers will dip due to a rushing TD from one of Cleveland’s running backs in a lower-scoring game.
Jameis Winston’s points range: 8-33, Prediction: 16
RBs: Nick Chubb & Jerome Ford
Nick Chubb scored a TD on his return from a horrific knee injury, much to the delight of Cleveland fans and the NFL community at large. However, he has not been prolific in his two games, recording a combined 14.90 points in HPPR leagues.
Some of this is doubtless the Browns being careful with his usage and the game against Baltimore was something of a shootout. Chubb may be in for a heavier workload against a stingy Chargers team, but his floor appears to be quite low in 2024.
Meanwhile, Jerome Ford filled in well for Chubb during his lengthy absence but has not had a great 2024 season. Ford has only one TD this year and has been struggling with an injury of his own. While he has been cleared to play on Sunday, starting Ford is too big a risk for a likely small reward.
Nick Chubb’s points range: 5-22, Prediction: 13
Jerome Ford’s points range: 2-15, Prediction: 6
WRs: Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman & Elijah Moore
With a gun-slinging QB like Jameis Winston, the Browns receiving corps is set for a more exciting second half of the season. That was certainly the case in Week 8, as we saw Cleveland’s top three receivers all break 10 points in HPPR leagues.
Jerry Jeudy came away with 5 receptions (8 targets) for 79 yards (10.40 points), while Cedric Tillman put up 7 receptions (9 targets) for 99 yards and 2 TDs (25.40 points) and Elijah Moore caught 8 passes (12 targets) for 85 yards (12.50 points).
The question is whether the Browns will throw a 400-yard passing game again, and it does feel unlikely. You’d imagine the Chargers will plan for this, but a strong run game combined with a deep threat makes Cleveland a tough team to plan for.
These three receivers all feel like good flex options in Week 9, and they really could go for anything between 4-25 points.
Jerry Jeudy’s points range: 5-25, Prediction: 13
Cedric Tillman’s points range: 4-26, Prediction: 9.5
Elijah Moore’s points range: 2-15, Prediction: 6.5
TE: David Njoku
David Njoku has looked good on his return from injury and in the last two weeks has put up some big points in fantasy football. With touchdowns in back-to-back weeks, Njoku should start for any team that doesn’t have an elite option and it would not be a surprise if we saw him in the endzone against LA.
David Njoku’s points range: 6-20, Prediction: 11
